Floating Between the Clouds and the Chasm: My Stay at Qi Feng Shan Homestay

If you’re taking on the iconic Tiger Leaping Gorge trek, finding the right stopover can make or break your trip. Instead of staying down at the busy hubs or right along the main road, we checked into Qi Feng Shan Homestay—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire trail.

Perched right between the Upper and Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, this place is a hidden gem. It’s the perfect sanctuary to rest your legs, soak in the dramatic landscape, and recharge before making the trek down into the Middle Gorge toward Tina’s or Moye.

Here is why this mountain hideaway stole my heart—and why you should add it to your trekking itinerary.

1. The Location: The Perfect Mid-Trek Mountain Haven

Because it sits quietly between Upper and Middle Gorge, Qi Feng Shan offers a perspective of the canyon that most day-trippers completely miss. You’re high enough to feel enveloped by the vast scale of the cliffs, yet perfectly positioned for the next morning’s journey down toward Tina's and Moye to face the raging Jinsha River up close.

2. The View: Watching the Sunset Perch on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Looking straight across the canyon, you get a front-row seat to the massive wall of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山). The absolute magic happens in the late afternoon. As the sun begins to sink, the golden light perches right along the back peaks of the snow-capped range, turning the rock and snow into a glowing canvas of fiery gold and orange. Sitting back on the terrace, watching the mountain light up in absolute silence away from the crowds, was pure poetry.

3. The Comfort: Piping Hot Water

If you’ve done high-altitude trekking in Yunnan, you know that hot water can be hit-or-miss. There is nothing worse than finishing a long, dusty day on the trail only to be greeted by a lukewarm trickle.

At Qi Feng Shan, I was so pleasantly surprised by the water pressure and the surprisingly hot, hot water. Slipping into a steamy shower to melt away the trail fatigue was an absolute luxury in the middle of the gorge!

4. The Food: Incredible Home-Cooked Naxi Feasts

Forget standard trekker fare—the home-cooked meals here are easily some of the best food we had on the entire route. Everything is prepared fresh with local ingredients, but the absolute star of the show is their signature Naxi Roasted Pork (纳西烤肉). Perfectly seasoned with local spices, crispy on the outside, and incredibly juicy inside, it’s the ultimate, hearty fuel after hours on your feet.

5. The Hospitality: A Host Who Truly Cares

Beyond the food and views, it’s the warmth of the host that makes this place feel so special. From making sure we were comfortable and well-fed to sharing local insights for the route down to Middle Gorge, the care and genuine hospitality made us feel less like passing tourists and more like welcomed guests in a private mountain home.

Final Thoughts

Qi Feng Shan Homestay isn't just a place to sleep—it's a soulful stopover that captures the wild spirit of Tiger Leaping Gorge. If you're planning your trek and want warm hospitality, incredible Naxi food, hot showers, and a sunset over Jade Dragon Snow Mountain you'll never forget, make sure to book a night here before heading down into the Middle Gorge!
